Chefuncte State Park

In 1939 the big state park east of Mandeville was named "Chefuncte State Park," as shown in this portion of the USGS Topo map of the time. It was later changed to Fontainebleau State Park. Click on the image to see a larger version.

The state originally named the park Tchefuncte State Park and Conservation Reservation, after the Tchefuncte River

Before it was Chefuncte State Park, it was Nott. Here's a 1935 topo map of the area...

An important archeological site was found in the park and has been studied for years to investigate the Tchefuncte Culture, as the early Native American inhabitants of St. Tammany were named.
