Life at the Post Office

When the Covington Post Office was located on Florida Street, in the second block north of Boston Street, it was a happening place. A&P Supermarket was right across the street, there were a lot of people coming and going there. I remember when the art students at Covington High would come paint holiday signs and pictures on the windows of the post office each year.

The Covington Post Office today

It was the center of community life in many ways, people would see each other every day at the same time, getting their mail, and sharing the latest news of their neighbors. Walker Percy would go there daily in his blue pick up truck to get his mail.

Here's a Tammany Talk column I wrote in 1972 about the daily experience of "going to the post office." Click on the image of the article to make it larger.

The Sun Porch of Greater New Orleans

On September 4, 1926, a huge special issue of the St. Tammany Farmer newspaper was published with dozens of articles on the progress being made on several fronts in St. Tammany Parish. Each Monday for the past few weeks, I have been posting several featured news clippings from that special 1926 edition. Here is the today's batch.

Bridge Crossing

Sometimes you can tell a lot about a community by the way it is able to handle unexpected situations. St. Tammany in the 1970's was a place where more cars were on the highways, people were getting busier, things were falling into a routine where getting from one place to another (say like driving to Mandeville from Covington) was starting to require some forethought and scheduling. Traffic was getting heavier, stress was building.

Then this happened...

Click on the image to read my Tammany Talk column published on September 2, 1973, which explains the incident and its working out.

I still see plenty of examples of motorists today taking the time to be courteous and thoughtful, but not as often as years ago. The month after Hurricane Katrina when there were no operating traffic signals was a reminder of how motorists can work things out when they encounter intersectional uncertainties.

Veterans Day 1983

The Covington-Abita Springs community takes Veterans Day ceremonies seriously. Here are some pictures from 35 years ago from the ceremony in front of the old parish courthouse, with flowers being placed on the War Memorial by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion on November 11, 1983.

The St. Pauls Band and the Covington High Band were on hand to provide the patriotic music, and the ROTC members were there to give a multi-gun salute. Click on the images to make them larger.
