On January 24, 1992, the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society Inc. received a copy of a research paper by Erin R. Gunter entitled "Louisiana Postal History, 1804-1865." The paper contained a number of images of envelopes mailed to and from New Orleans during that period of time, many of them passing through St. Tammany Parish.

The above information was provided by Covington resident Jack Terry, who commented on the materials found in the research paper, "Of interest is the envelope from the first steamboat to Natchez (up river) in 1812. More interesting are the envelopes showing that the US sent mail to both the Republic of West Florida and Spanish West Florida -- Showing that the US was aware of both the Republic of West Florida and Spanish West Florida before they took it over and said they purchased it from France. Also several covers showing that mail was sent to Natchez via sailboat crossing lake Pontchartrain."
