Bike Race in Downtown Covington

The 51st annual Stage Race of the Tour de Louisiane took place in downtown Covington  Sunday, June 5, with cyclists running the course at high speeds. The event benefitted the Northshore Humane Society, which had a table with literature and a few volunteers with dogs on leashes.

The New Orleans Bicycle Club said this race is, as far as it can determine, the oldest such race in the country. "This is a race that is run entirely by and for competitive cyclists, most of whom would really rather be riding in it," the program booklet said.

The Covington race course takes place on a number of streets, New Hampshire, Columbia, Kirkland, Gibson and Lockwood Street, with a one block stretch on Boston St.

President Ronald Reagan's statue had a great view of the race.

The group thanked the city of Covington for its hosting of the event, with Covington city police and deputies with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office lending a hand in the operation of the annual race.

The Covington criterium took place beginning at 7 a.m., with a number of races held in different age categories through 1:30 p.m. when the awards ceremony was scheduled to take place.
