Dutsch & Peters Dept. Store

Dutsch & Peters was a large variety store located at 421 North Columbia Street in Covington that offered a wide selection of clothing, fabrics and shoes. Edward Dutsch and Theodore Peters were the owners. They were brothers-in-law who purchased the old McGinnis General Merchandise store.

It first opened on May 30, 1949, under the name of "The Variety Store," with 1500 square feet of merchandise.

In 1959 it changed its name to Dutsch & Peters after an extensive remodeling and expansion to 7000 square feet of floorspace. By 1969, the business had 19 employees. It was a central meeting place for families looking for good clothing or the materials to make their own clothing.

I went there once to buy a heavy-duty rain suit, bright yellow, and one of those Maine lobster fisherman rain hats.

In 1959 the store was greatly enlarged and renovated.

In 1965 Edward Dutsch, who had been selling musical instruments out of a shop next to Dutsch and Peters, opened up a new location for the venture in the 300 block of North Columbia.

A complete collection of dress patterns, materials, sewing accessories, and hats made the department store a favorite place for homemakers to shop. Many area residents were saddened when the store closed.
