Lucille Glisson, Community Volunteer

 In 1976 the News Banner ran an informative article on the Greater Covington Chamber of Commerce's Auxiliary Group and its plans for the upcoming annual Spring Garden Tour as well as events pertaining to that year's American Bicentennial celebration.

Lucille Glisson, a Covington resident active in many community organizations, was chosen as chairman for the effort. 

Here is the text for the first portion of the above article:

COVINGTON - The Covington Chamber of Commerce Auxiliary again this year sponsored the Spring Home and Garden Tour with Miss Lucille Glisson named as Tour Chairwoman. Miss Glisson has worked throughout the years on many of St. Tammany Parish's most worthwhile projects. A charter member of Covington Business & Professional Women's Club, she has served in most offices the club had to offer including president for 1941-42.

Outstanding among her diversified club and civic efforts, she was the Chairwoman who set up plans for the establishment of a public library in St. Tammany Parish and served as first President of the Library for three consecutive years. She continues to serve as a member on the Board of Directors. She was also a Trustee of the Louisiana library Association and member of the handbook committee of that organization in 1960-61.

Miss Glisson has worked as Chairwoman for the United War Fund of Louisiana, chaired the Red Cross fund-raising drives and served as Parish Chairwoman of the American Cancer Society Drive. She was secretary-treasurer of the Louisiana Tung Festival for Covington and vice-president of Chi Chapter of Delphians as well as a member of the council for three Parishes for the Louisiana Heart Fund.

Lucille has been an active-participant in church work, having been Vice-President of the Women of the Presbyterian Church. She is also a member at the present time of the Gavel Club of Covington Business and Professional Women's Club, the Pilot Club in New Orleans, Covington Garden Club. She is, aside from her work for the Spring Home and Garden Tour, currently serving on the Bicentennial Committee for the Covington Business & Professional Women's Club.

Miss Glisson was a real estate agent, and she also provided accounting and income tax services. 


Her father was instrumental in the plans for a bridge over Lake Pontchartrain and served as mayor of Abita Springs for two terms.
