What was going on in St. Tammany 100 years ago this week? The following link is provided by the Library of Congress and its Chronicling America service. CLICK HERE for a link to the St. Tammany Farmer newspaper edition of January 20, 1917.
Some of the headlines are Farm Loan Meeting At Courthouse Today, Town Laws To Be Passed Segregating Consumptives, and C. S. A. Furhmann Has Taken Over The Entire Interest in the Covington Amusement Company (And Will Manage The Same).
The law regarding the segregating of "consumptives" dealt with boarding houses taking in residents who had tuberculosis and/or yellow fever (people with "consumption.") Laws were deemed necessary to keep those "consumptives" separate from the other guests at the boarding houses to hopefully prevent the spread of the disease.
