The 1961 Flood in Covington

Here are several pictures of the 1961 flood that hit the Bogue Falaya River as it passed through Covington. Click on the images to make them larger.

In March of 2021, Covington Mayor Mark Johnson reminded residents that "For centuries the area between the Tchefuncte River near Goodbee and the Bogue Falaya River near Lee Road have been flooded by sheet flows that actually connect the two rivers into one. Any structure built flat to the ground should expect water inside of it.

"Significant rain events took place in 2016, 1996, 1983, 1961, 1947, 1928, 1916, 1898 and 1875. The flood of 1928 was comparable to the more recent one of  2016."
