Rooftop Navigation

 The fledgling aviation industry in the early 1900's had one problem: pilots had a hard time figuring out where they were. So the answer was for each town to paint the name of their community on the rooftops of barns.

"It was suggested by the aviators who came here in planes... that if the nearby cities would take steps in having signs with the names of the cities painted on barns, it would enable the pilots to determine their exact location without any difficulty from the air and it would prove of great value to all pilots and aviators transversing for the first time that particular territory..."
