Voluntary Singing

In 1972 I wrote this column about the decline in voluntary group singing. Fortunately today, 45 years later, community singing groups are back in fashion, and even growing in number. Click on the image to read the article.

Singing will always be in fashion one way or the other. Let's not forget the local Gospel Singing groups, Barber Shop Quartets, Sweet Adelines, late night lullabies for babies, local high school Show Choirs, and hopeful soloists putting out their first CD (or mp3 file). If we include the individuals and groups that get paid (but don't get paid that much), then there are dulcimer groups, wedding singers, jazz musicians and singers, night club singers, and weekend festival guitar players who also sing. Well, I guess there is more singing going on that I had first thought.
