Tea Time

Back in September of 2011 Covington Elementary School second graders Calli Flocke and Abigail Byron enjoyed reading the story “Mr. Poppers Penguins”.  In the story Mr. Poppers enjoys having tea and crumpets at tea time each day. 

Ms. Scherer  decided having tea and crumpets, sugar cookies would be a wonderful experience for her children.  They discussed and charted how their experience was the same and different as Mr. Poppers.  They discussed the difference customs and location  of Mr. Poppers home.  The class also worked on good table conversation and table etiquette.  

A “jolly” good time was had by all.

Lakeshore's First Yearbook

Lakeshore High School celebrated its first yearbook distribution and signing party in September of 2011.  Students are always excited to see and sign yearbooks when they are first distributed each year, but these Lakeshore yearbooks from the 2010-2011 school year were the very first ones ever for the new school which had opened up in 2010.

Food Bank Collections

In 2011, nine years ago, the Fontainebleau Jr. High National Junior Honor Society was active in collection food items for the Covington Food Bank. Pictured are members Christian Thibodeaux, Hannah Campo, Haley Fremin, Catherine Scallon, Abby Shannon, Jordan Cross, and Olivia Najolia.  The NJHS spearheaded the school food drive in conjunction with the Covington Junior Corps 9/11 Food Drive to help benefit the Covington Food Bank.  The FJH community collected over 500 food items.

The following 8th grade students were elected as Officers of the Fontainebleau Junior High National Junior Honor Society for 2011-12.  Shown left to right are  Brittney Freeman, Historian; Blair Kent, Secretary; Whitney Ward, President; Paige White, Vice President; and Abby Shannon, Treasurer.

Senior Citizen News from 1976

1970s Krewe of Slidellians Parade

Max Rodriguez Jr. posted a video on Facebook showing a silent 8mm film featuring the Krewe of Slidellians Parade in the early 1970's. This is footage from Front Street near the train station. The man in the beginning is his father, Max Rodriguez Sr, who later became police chief.

Cultus Pearson - The Crab Man of Lacombe

In 2013 Cultus Pearson took to the microphone at a Louisiana Sea Grant presentation and told about his life catching crabs in Lake Pontchartrain. The video of his talk is on YouTube, and a link to view that is presented below. In his talk, he shared his efforts to protect the crabbing industry, the shell dredging challenge and the legislative visits that it involved.

Cultus Pearson, commonly known as "The Crabman of Lacombe," lived within the Pontchartrain Basin, since the 1930s. He grew up in South Point, La., a small fishing community on the Southshore near Irish Bayou, and learned crabbing from his neighbor.

His father worked as a bridge tender at the south drawbridge of the Southern Railroad, but always supported his sons' fishing efforts. Learning all he could about the habits of blue crabs, Mr. Pearson and his brother created a very successful crab supply business that later included a refined softshell crab process that is still used today.

Mr. Pearson served in WWII as a Sergeant in the Army and was awarded the Bronze Star for service in the South Pacific. After returning from the war he finished high school and earned a degree in Forestry from LSU. He was married to his wife Frances Davis for 63 years and they raised nine children. Mr. Pearson owned a service station in Lacombe and built fiberglass pirogues and lake skiffs while his children were growing up, but continued to crab throughout his life.

He died on February 2, 2020.
