The Houltonville Map

An informative "lesson plan" on Fairview Riverside State Park and the Otis House in particular was prepared some time ago by Ann Durel, interpretive ranger at the park. It included a number of topics, photographs and maps. Here is one of the most interesting.

During the 1980's archaeologist Allen Saltus studied part of the Tchefuncte River and Lake Pontchartrain and found abundant evidence of historic structures and submerged vessels. This Madisonville area map shows the location of Jay's Sawmill, White City, Ferry Landing, the Fairview House (Otis House), and the railroad tracks coming in from the north.

This map was part of Saltus' "Submerged Cultural Resources Investigation of a Portion of the Tchefuncta River" report.

In 1991 Saltus presented the results of his research to the historical society.
