A long time ago, when plug in wired telephone switchboards were high-technology, I wrote an article about the switchboard operators at Southeastern Louisiana University. This was in 1970. Now that everyone has a cellphone, you don't run into switchboards that often.
Today, it's either a phone menu (yikes!) or voice mail. However, there are still some telephone switchboards, real live people helping you connect to the people you want to talk to.
